Population Research Centre, Bhubaneswar

Population Research Centre, Odisha is affiliated to Utkal University and is located in Bhubaneswar. Centre was established in the year 1977 and functioning under the system of rotation of the Honorary Directorship among the Heads/Professors of different Post Graduate Departments of the Utkal University till February, 1991. In pursuance of the orders of the Hon'ble Chancellor the system of rotation of Honorary Directorship was dispensed with for smooth functioning of the Centre and the Centre has been working as a unit of the University under the Vice Chancellor as Ex Officio Director since February, 1991.

It had been contributing substantially to the population programmes and policy formulation at the State as well as National level. The Centre directly functions as a unit of the Utkal University under the Vice Chancellor as Ex-officio Director. The Deputy Director functions as the Chief Executive of the Centre with full control over staff, funds and projects.

Professor Sabita Acharya is an Indian Anthropologist and expert in Social and Cultural Anthropology who holds the Commonwealth Post-Doctoral Fellowship Award, granting her the experience of working at the prestigious University of Oxford U.K in the year 2002. She has served as the Chairperson of Post Graduate Council, and Director of College Development Council, in Utkal University in the term 2019-2020. She has been teaching and gaining research experience for over the last three decades. She has done her doctoral work on "Anthropology of Pilgrimage at Puri and Simhachalam" in the year 1991 from Utkal University. She has undertaken fieldwork in different tribal and rural villages to study different aspects of rural and tribal communities including PVTGs (Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups) of Odisha.

She has presented research-based papers in various academic forums like world congresses organised by International Union of Anthropological and Ethnographical Sciences (IUAES) at China, Manchester, Brazil, Poland and institutions like University of Tuebingin and Goethe University, Germany. As a prolific writer, she has penned over 60 research articles and edited three books maintaining academics at the peak of her priorities. Her book "Pilgrimage of Indian Civilization" is highly acclaimed by researchers and students alike. She has been trusted and credited with completing many research projects including being awarded a Major Research Project by University Grants Commission (UGC). After a successful stint in educational and administrative roles, she has superannuated from service on 30th April 2020. Presently, she has been appointed as the first lady Vice Chancellor of Utkal University, Bhubaneswar since November 2020.

Dr. Krishna Chandra Rath (b. 1965) is a post graduate in Geography with M.Phil. and Ph.D. from Utkal University, Bhubaneswar. He also possesses a Masters Degree in Rural & Regional Development Planning from Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, Thailand. He has also been awarded Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) fellowship during his M.Sc. in Rural & Regional Development Planning from AIT, Bangkok. He is presently working as an associate professor in P.G. Department of Geography, Utkal University.

His specialization and field of interest includes Urban and Regional Planning, social research method, urban environmental management and planning, geospatial technology and its applications and natural disaster management. He is having around seven completed major research projects (funded by DST, UGC, etc.), around 40 research papers published in referred international and national journals and life membership of 20 numbers of various professional bodies to his credit.
